Diversity and inclusion hits the main stage at Greenbiz 18

In a conference known for passionate presentations about the Circular Economy and renewable energy innovations, this year’s Greenbiz Conference featured, perhaps for the first time, a conversation about diversity and inclusion. The emergence of diversity and inclusion as a topic at a sustainability conference might have surprised a few participants. However, those attendees adjusting their strategies to align with the UN Sustainable Development goals are already familiar with the convergence of topics like climate change, gender equity and poverty alleviation into a broad sustainability framework.

The presentation highlighted a barely six month old initiative called CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion. What started as an inaugural summit with 70 CEOs now has more than 350 CEOs of the world’s leading companies and business organizations having signed on. The stated goal is to leverage their individual and collective voices to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

WeSpire started as a sustainability engagement platform for forward-thinking global companies. Our recent launch of a positive workplace module, that includes a number of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, mirrors our customer’s expanding view of sustainability. We also see convergence in our customer’s roles with some former heads of sustainability now overseeing social responsibility more broadly, including diversity and inclusion and they want their programs to be integrated as well.

What this trend reflects is the acknowledgement that if a company achieves the high bar of carbon neutrality, but isn’t diverse or doesn’t offer equitable compensation for women, then it’s hard to really say they are truly sustainable in the broader sense of the word. True sustainability addresses the full range of environmental, social and governance factors. For WeSpire, this expansion is very exciting. #MakeAmericaWell Encourages CEOs to Take Ownership for Employee Wellbeing

If you’ve ever used Classpass, taken a PureBarre class, or booked a haircut appointment, chances are that you’ve used the app from Mindbody Online, an innovative technology company that helps wellbeing companies to run and scale their businesses digitally.

Last week, co-founder & CEO Rick Stollmeyer took out full page ads in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, met with Jim Cramer and appeared at the NASDAQ to issue a call to action to the business leaders of America. America’s employees are not particularly healthy, it’s costing everyone a lot of money [$3.4T was spent on healthcare], and people need help and support to improve fitness, eat healthy and reduce stress which contributes to 75% of the expense. The #MakeAmericaWell challenge encourages business leaders to commit to investing more in employee wellness.

However, Mindbody doesn’t offer employee wellbeing solutions to corporations directly and Stollmeyer wanted to offer a solution for those leaders who took the challenge and needed one. We were so proud when MindBody decided to include a reference to WeSpire in the challenge – and highlight our increased investment in wellbeing programs and our revolutionary behavior change platform. This way, leaders who want to invest more in wellbeing but are struggling to implement a program have at least one option right in front of them.
